Getting out and about

Visiting Datca

Whilst visiting Symi, it is a good opportunity to take the local excursion boat to the Turkish Town of Datca to experience another country. Datca is 1 hour by boat from Symi and a working harbour town but a wonderful place to shop! Generally there is a larger variety and goods are cheaper than on Symi. The many shops sell clothes, jewellery, honey, spices and the area has wonderful teahouses selling ice cream and pastries.

Boats

There are many excursion boats making rips around the island of Symi to various bays, stopping en route for swimming. There are quite a number of small islets around Symi, such as Nimos, which is the largest one, as well as Sesklia, Artikonisi, Koulountro, Troubeto, Chondros, Plati, Oxia, Diabates and Marmaras. All these small islands can be visited with local caique's excursions or small boats.

Local transport

There are two buses on Symi. The green bus makes the short journey to Chorio and on to Pedi Bay, hourly. Regardless of where you get on or off, the fare is 70 cents. The white mini-bus makes two trips a day to Panormitis, a 30 minute journey and the fare is just under 3 Euros each way. A fine way to enjoy the fabulous views over Symi as it climbs up the island and down to Panormitis, allowing stops for photographs.
