Symi Villages

Chorio

Chorio is the Old Town at the top end of the Kali Strata, some 350 ancient steps upward from the harbour. Having lots of twisted amazing alleys, with hardly any access to cars, this is quite unique. A few ruined buildings are still seen, but the majority of these are being slowly renovated. There are several tavernas and supermarkets mostly centred around the village square.

Yialos (Gialos)

The harbour area known as Yialos (sometimes spelt Gialos) is really extensive, considering the size of Symi island and very cosmopolitan in character. This is because it used to be a major trading centre for the export of sponges and also for shipbuilding. Although some of the houses are now derelict you can see that once they must have been very grand - this is especially noticeable on the Kali Strata. The harbour area is well served with shops and tavernas and has a truly amazing 'buzz' in the evenings. A wonderful atmosphere is experienced whilst strolling along the harbour front on a warm, summer evening.

Pedi

South of Yialos in the valley below Chorio, will be found Pedi Bay. This small fishing village has a small, stony beach with several tavernas, providing a superb choice of local cuisine, and a couple of supermarkets. Pedi has a wonderful friendly atmosphere. It can be reached either by the local bus or a water-taxi.

Nimborios-Marathounda-Panormitis

North of Yialos you will find the bay and settlement of Nimborios (sometimes known as Emporios) and a further small settlement at Marathounda. A further settlement of around 30 locals, can be found around the Monastery of Panormitis.
