The original church of the Monastery of Archangel Michael was built on the site of an ancient temple believed to have been dedicated to Apollo, around 450 AD. St Michael is the patron Saint of Sailors. Overnight accommodation is available at the monastery.
Various festivals are celebrated here throughout the year and the brightly coloured and decorated bell tower stands out in this small port.
Monastery Walls
The walls of the Monastery of Panormitis are covered in little silver charms, or votive offerings, left by pilgrims asking for help with everything from an illness to finding a wife or husband.
